DIY Lemon Sugar Scrub Recipe & Video

Making a DIY Lemon Sugar Scrub at home can be super easy.  I especially love this recipe because it’s a cleanser and a scrub all rolled into one.  It doesn’t leave an oily residue on the bottom of your shower either, a nice plus.

Recipe for DIY Lemon Sugar Scrub

  1. Place sugar in stainless bowl, breaking up any lumps.
  2. Add color if using and blend into the sugar.
  3. Add essential oil into sugar and mix well so all sugar is coated with essential oils.  If mixing with hands, it’s highly recommended you use gloves.
  4. Alternating between the Grape Seed Oil & the Castile Soap, slowly add to the sugar, mixing well.  If you prefer a more liquid scrub, simply add more castile soap and Grapeseed oil in equal proportions.
  5. If using, add the Grapefruit Seed Oil. Mix well.

Some ingredient tips:

Sugar – Use the smallest grain you can.  The smaller the granule, the better scrubbing action you’ll get.  Try to find extra fine granulated organic or regular sugar.

Oil – The recipe suggests using Grape Seed Oil, but you can use Sweet Almond or Jojoba.  Grape Seed is recommended because it non-comedogenic (meaning it doesn’t clog pores) and it has a low probability of irritating most skin types.  It’s also a good choice for those with nut allergies or sensitivities.

Castile Soap – We use Dr. Bonner’s Baby Mild Liquid Soap in our scrubs at the store.  It’s organic and has almost no scent.  A lot of castile soaps can have a strong scent that’s not very pleasant.  Dr. Bonner’s also makes several nice scents like peppermint, almond, citrus and lavender.  If you choose to use one of those, you won’t have to add an essential oils.  They all smell great.

Essential Oils – If you do decide to use an essential oil, remember that they are very powerful.  I little goes a long way!  Especially with peppermint.  If using peppermint, 2-3 drops might be all you need.  If you are looking for a more relaxing scrub, check out some relaxation blends available at your local health food store to find one you like.  Peace & Calming essential oil blend from Young Living smells a-maz-ing and offers therapeutic value as well.

Color – Who doesn’t like a little color, right?  If you are trying to keep it simple and don’t care about keeping your recipe natural, food coloring will work.  If you want to keep it natural, check with your health food store for natural colorants.  Another option to is add seeds like cranberry seeds or blueberry seeds available at Michaels.

Preservatives – The recipe uses Grapefruit Seed Oil as a natural preservative.  This will keep your recipe good for a couple of weeks, but not much longer.  Keep your scrub to the side of your shower and don’t allow it to come into contact with water to keep it fresher longer.
